The horrifying truth about the porn industry

It was last December when some socking revelations for the pornographic website pornhub appalled the world of social media. The findings of this investigation conducted by the New York Times was related to context of sexual and physical abuse as well as child pornography. This leads to more of intense reactions and rough critique against the company. Thus, many social media users decided to create an online platform, in order to collect signatures for the removal of this inappropriate content and force the site to stop running altogether.
These reactions led the website not only to remove millions of videos (from 13.000.000 dropped to 3.000.000) but also to delete a large number of accounts. From 2007 when the website started to offer its services anybody who had access to the site, could create his own account and upload material. This has changed and today the unverified accounts are deleted and for the process of the content the crosscheck of the personal information is required. Hence, we need to realize if pornhub was aware of the actual age of the young protagonists of these controversial videos and did not take any action to prevent it. It is very important to remember that the site has 3.5 million of visitors weekly and in global rankings pornhub is the 10th-most-visited platform. After the scandalous revelation there has been an ongoing debate about the real problems caused by the pornography industry, problems that seem to be more serious, than anyone of us could expect.
After all these years, it is pretty clear that watching pornographic videos is considered socially accepted especially for the male audience. The technological evolution has facilitated the access to this kind of content. The period when the teenage boys were hiding their playboy magazines under the bed has changed. Now they just search sex videos in popular websites incognito (anonymous research mode). Why is this happening though? Don’t we know that the content of these videos presents professionals or amateurs who decided to be part of it? Isn’t it just an industry that supports the livelihood of thousands of people around the world? So after all is this industry harmful to anybody?
Firstly, we need to stress out one of the negative consequences of the industry for the young population who can be misled while they are in the stage of discovering their sexual orientations This has definitely a great impact not only on the minors but generally to people who are familiar to the procedure. The investigation findings showed that more than the 88% of the sex videos include sexual assaults and violence against women, with the most disheartening feeling we get is their actual reactions. Their usually positive stance towards it creates the impression of accepting violence and connects subconsciously the sexual enjoyment with it. ‘’We are what we consume ‘’ is a saying that seems to apply not only to our eating habits but also to what we choose to watch and listen to. If we assume that the average amount of times a teenager watches porn videos is 2 to 5 per week then what is the image he has formed in his mind about sexual relations and women. We need to realize that many of us fall to misconceptions about sexuality and sexual reality because of pornography and especially the insufficient sexual education.
On the other side of the coin, pornography is not fully responsible for the f the problems of the sexual harassments and violence towards girls and women. However, it is clear that the adult film industry is a significant factor and plays a crucial role on developing several pathogeneses. The aim of this article is eliminated to inform and denounce all the dysfunctions of this system, and its impact not only in a social but also in a more personal level.
What does this mean? Is it a good solution to ban that kind of videos and condemn the offenders for watching them? Well the answer to the question is no, and this is happening because in a state of democracy you are free to watch anything you wish, as long as it stays in legal boundaries. The majority would respond to a similar question that the actors of porn films enjoy their participation in the films. According to a research it was proved that the most of the people who take part in sex videos were probably deceived and trapped in this situation. Unfortunately the majority of the victims are women, with many of the ex porno workers revealing that were forced to do something that didn’t want to or to be raped in front of the camera. However even for the women who did choose to be part of this industry they are rarely treated well. Only few of them get the main roles. In this case why they just don’t leave? But it’s their job, don’t they get paid for it, someone could argue.
However, a successful career in pornography has never been a dream job for any of these women. It is fact that many women staring in sex videos have been deceived and blackmailed in order to continue offering their services for the industry. There are other examples of ambitious women in their effort to start a career in modelling were trapped in fake auditions and led with force into business. There is a huge number of videos representing the rape of unconscious girls available on the internet. There are not porno stars but victims of human trafficking or prostitutes that are forced to be part of this situation. The 1/3 of the victims of trafficking were sexually abused at least once on camera. But for every man who watches these videos all of them are just well-paid actresses.
As our awareness of sexual assaults is growing, we need to realize that contention cannot be forced. The difficult part about pornographic material is that we cannot be certain if a video contains rape or sex with consent.
In the industry of porno women are expendable. The statistics have revealed that even those who have retired, they barely live until their 50s, in countries where the average human lifespan is around 75 to 78. Well there are a lot of reasons that explain these numbers. The first reason is apparently drugs, since the use of substances is a part of women’s daily life in pornography. Sex workers also face potential health hazards from STDs. The producers of the films often choose to record their protagonists having sex with no any protection in order to satisfy the majority of the male audience. Another reason is that they cannot escape from the stigma and carry the label of the prostitute for a life. In many cases women were suffered or killed from their lovers because of their “unethical” past. And finally some of them commit suicide.
Considering suicide we have to contemplate the social causes that the lead women terminate their lives. This profitable industry which is maintained and preserved by men thrives upon women’s objectification creating an environment of social hatred, frustration and aversion to the concept of pornography. Would you mind to share your table with a man that goes to a brothel? Would a man feel comfortable to share his table with a sex worker? Probably not.
We are driven to the conclusion that the industry of porno is preserved by the people who watch systematically sex videos, an industry that does not hesitate to promote videos of women’s rapes or violence of any kind. Like any other industry defined by the law of supply and demand, pornography is not just what a male individual does in his room. It is something bigger than a personal moment of pleasure. Because your special demands are related with a whole system of deception and exploitation of girls and women.
